The Maldives begins here. North and South Malé Atoll — collectively known as Kaafu Atoll — is where most travellers take their first breath of warm, salt-tinged air and glimpse that colour of water that no photograph has ever quite managed to capture. Home to the capital island Malé, the international airport, and some of the most iconic resorts in the entire archipelago, this is the atoll that built the Maldives' reputation as a honeymoon and luxury destination. And the beauty of it is this: you can step off a plane and be floating in a turquoise lagoon in under ten minutes.
Whether you're planning your first Maldives trip and want the ease of a short speedboat transfer, or you're searching for a barefoot luxury escape without the seaplane logistics, North and South Malé Atoll has something at almost every price point and travel style. This guide covers all the resorts in both atolls, the best local islands to stay on, how to get there, practical tips, and everything in between — so you can choose the right corner of this extraordinary place for you.

At a Glance: North and South Malé Atoll
North and South Malé Atoll together form the heart of the Maldives tourism scene — and are collectively known as Kaafu Atoll, the official administrative name. You'll often see “Kaafu Atoll” used on maps, booking platforms and resort descriptions, so it's worth knowing that North Malé Atoll, South Malé Atoll and Kaafu Atoll all refer to the same region. They surround the capital Malé and Velana International Airport — which means almost every visitor to the Maldives passes through here. The atolls are home to more resorts than any other region, from budget-friendly islands a short hop from the airport to ultra-luxury hideaways on the outer edges of the atoll.

How North and South Malé Atoll Works
Geography
Kaafu Atoll — which encompasses both North and South Malé Atoll — is the most central atoll in the Maldives, stretching roughly 100 kilometres from north to south. It sits in the middle of the island chain, with Malé island (the capital) and Hulhumale (the reclaimed island adjacent to the airport) at its heart. North Malé Atoll contains around 50 islands, of which roughly 25 are resort islands and several are inhabited local islands. South Malé Atoll is smaller and less densely populated, with around 12 resort islands and a handful of local islands including the well-known Maafushi.
The landscape is quintessential Maldives: low-lying coral islands fringed by white sand, surrounded by lagoons in layered shades of turquoise, aquamarine and deep blue. Many islands are barely 1.5 metres above sea level. The reef structure throughout both atolls is complex and varied — channels between islands create strong currents that attract pelagic marine life, while sheltered inner lagoons offer calm snorkelling conditions.

Getting There: Transfers
The single biggest practical advantage of both atolls is the transfer. Unlike more remote parts of the Maldives — where reaching your resort requires a domestic flight followed by a speedboat, or a seaplane that only flies in daylight — virtually every resort in North and South Malé Atoll is reachable by speedboat directly from Velana International Airport. Transfer times range from 10 minutes (Kurumba) to around 55 minutes (Meeru). Most are in the 20–40 minute range.
This means you can arrive on a late-night flight, sleep at a transit hotel in Hulhumale, and be at your resort the next morning — or, if you time it right, transfer directly on arrival. There's no seaplane scheduling to worry about, no needing to land before sunset, and no domestic flight connection. For first-time visitors to the Maldives, this simplicity is often the decisive factor. Transfer costs typically run between $100–$350 per person one-way depending on the resort, with some higher-end properties including the transfer in the rate.
Marine Life & Underwater World
Both atolls offer excellent snorkelling and diving, though the underwater character varies more than you might expect between individual resorts. Several iconic dive sites are found in North Malé Atoll — including the Manta Point near Lankanfinolhu, famous for regular manta ray sightings between December and April, and various channel dives and thila sites (underwater pinnacles) that attract sharks, barracuda and eagle rays. Blacktip reef sharks are common throughout both atolls and can often be spotted directly from resort beaches without even getting in the water. Hawksbill turtles are frequently seen near reef edges, particularly at resorts with strong house reefs such as Baros, Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru and Huvafenfushi. Whale sharks can occasionally be spotted year-round but are not a defining feature of these atolls in the way they are in South Ari Atoll.
For a detailed overview of snorkelling across the Maldives, our Snorkelling in Maldives guide covers the best spots and what to expect in the water.

Above Water: Vibe and Character
North and South Malé Atoll is not the place to come if you want to feel entirely off the grid. This is the most developed and visited part of the Maldives — with Malé, the world's most densely populated capital city, at its centre. What that means practically is more choice, better infrastructure and easier access. Resorts here tend to be more varied than in remote atolls: you'll find everything from a basic 30-room island aimed at budget travellers to a sprawling ultra-luxury complex with ten restaurants and a private helicopter pad. Day trips, excursions and inter-island connections are easy to arrange. Sunset dolphin cruises, sandbank picnics and snorkelling excursions depart from most resorts daily.
The proximity to Malé also makes this the natural choice for combining a Maldives resort stay with a night or two exploring local life in the capital — though Malé itself is more interesting for its authenticity than its beauty.
Resort Landscape
The resort mix across both atolls is remarkably diverse. North Malé Atoll leans toward a wide middle range — many resorts sit in the $1,000–$3,000 per couple per night bracket — but also contains some of the most prestigious addresses in the Maldives (Baros, Huvafenfushi, One & Only Reethi Rah, Patina). South Malé Atoll is somewhat more polarised: a handful of excellent mid-range and accessible resorts sit alongside ultra-luxury flagship properties like the Waldorf Astoria Ithaafushi and OZEN Maadhoo.

Local Island Life
Both atolls have a well-established local island tourism scene, particularly South Malé Atoll where Maafushi has become the most visited guesthouse island in the entire Maldives. For travellers on a tighter budget, or for anyone who wants to experience authentic Maldivian life alongside resort-style day trips, these islands are an excellent option. The key thing to understand about local islands is that alcohol is not served (resorts are on uninhabited islands where different rules apply), and modest dress is expected away from the designated bikini beach areas. Our guide to local islands in the Maldives explains how this works in more detail.
Best For / Not Ideal For
North and South Malé Atoll is best for: first-time visitors to the Maldives, honeymoon couples who want luxury without seaplane complexity, families who value easy logistics and a wide choice of resort types, short stays of 3–5 nights, and anyone who wants to combine a resort stay with time on a local island without needing to fly.
It is less ideal for: travellers seeking genuine remoteness and an away-from-it-all atmosphere, those hoping to combine a resort stay with whale shark encounters (head to Ari Atoll instead), and experienced Maldives travellers who want to explore less visited atolls. If you're looking for seaplane views, dramatic remoteness or manta ray encounters in a UNESCO biosphere reserve, consider reading our guide about Baa & Raa Atoll.
Resorts in North Malé Atoll
North Malé Atoll has more than 30 resort islands — the highest concentration in the entire Maldives. The resorts below are a curated selection from our database, chosen for their quality, range and relevance to different travel styles. This is not an exhaustive list of every resort in the atoll. All resorts are listed alphabetically.
Adaaran Select Hudhuranfushi
Hudhuranfushi is well known among surfers for its accessible reef break, but it's equally popular with families and couples looking for a relaxed, affordable all-inclusive experience. Four restaurants, a kids club for ages 4–12, and overwater villas make it a versatile choice. The all-inclusive format means you know exactly what you'll spend from the moment you arrive.

Bandos Maldives

Bandos is a classic, unpretentious Maldivian island that has been welcoming guests since the early days of tourism here. Just 15 minutes from the airport by speedboat, it offers a relaxed atmosphere with a good house reef for snorkelling, four restaurants, and a kids club — all at a price that doesn't require taking out a second mortgage. It's ideal for families and first-time visitors who want the core Maldives experience without the premium pricing.

Baros Maldives

Baros is the gold standard for a classic Maldives honeymoon: intimate, impeccably styled, and built around one of the finest house reefs in the entire atoll. Adults-only in atmosphere (though no formal restriction), with a Booking.com rating of 9.5 and a reputation for exceptional service, Baros is the resort people come back to again and again. The snorkelling directly from the beach is some of the best you'll find this close to Malé.

Centara Mirage Lagoon Maldives

Built for families, Centara Mirage Lagoon is one of the most child-friendly resorts in North Malé Atoll and among the top family resorts near the airport. Dhawa Ihuru — part of the Banyan Tree Group — is a compact, barefoot-style island with one of the best house reefs you'll find this close to Malé. With just 20 minutes on the speedboat and a transfer included in the rate, it's a smart pick for snorkelling lovers who don't want the fuss of a long transfer or a complex all-inclusive package. Ideal for couples and those on shorter stays who prioritise the underwater world over resort facilities.
📍 Speedboat 20 min | 💰 From $2,570 based on AI for 3 nights (2p, transfer included) | ⭐ 9.3
Finolhu Villas
Finolhu is the adults-only Club Med boutique offering in North Malé Atoll — and a genuinely distinctive one. With overwater-only villas, a full all-inclusive concept and a high privacy score, it occupies an interesting niche: the ease and inclusivity of a Club Med product combined with the romance of an adults-only overwater escape. Rated 9.7, it's one of the highest-rated resorts in the atoll and well suited to couples who want a stress-free premium AI experience.
📍 Seaplane | 💰 From $3,125 based on B&B for 3 nights (2p, incl. transfer) | ⭐ 9.7
Gili Lankanfushi

Gili Lankanfushi is an icon of the eco-luxury segment — famous for its enormous overwater villas (some of the largest in the Maldives), its no-news, no-shoes philosophy, and an approach to barefoot luxury that feels genuinely distinctive rather than just a marketing line. Rated 9.7 on Booking.com, it's a consistent favourite among honeymooners and couples who want a romantic, immersive experience close to Malé, without the formality of more traditional luxury resorts.
📍 Speedboat 20 min | 💰 From $6,100 based on B&B for 3 nights (2p) | ⭐ 9.7
Hard Rock Hotel Maldives

Hard Rock Hotel Maldives is the most energetic resort near Malé — and unapologetically so. Part of the CROSSROADS complex (shared with SAII Lagoon, see below), it offers overwater villas, six restaurants, a water slide, a kids club, live music evenings and a Hard Rock Cafe atmosphere that is completely unlike anything else in the atoll. We spent a night here at the end of our trip and the floating breakfast in our private pool — with a school of dolphins jumping in the distance — was, genuinely, the single most special moment of our entire Maldives holiday. The night walk across the lit bridge, with reef sharks gliding beneath us, was an unexpected highlight the kids still talk about.
📍 Speedboat 15 min | 💰 From $1,700 based on B&B for 3 nights (2p, incl. transfer) | ⭐ 9.1

Huvafenfushi Maldives

Huvafenfushi is legendary among Maldives insiders — partly for its exceptional house reef (one of the best in the entire country), and partly because it was home to the world's first underwater spa. A boutique resort with a strong focus on romance, private pool villas and an intimate atmosphere, it sits 30 minutes from the airport and is one of the best options in North Malé Atoll for couples seeking genuine luxury without the scale of a large resort.
📍 Speedboat 30 min | 💰 From $5,360 based on HB for 3 nights (2p) | ⭐ 9.4
Kuda Villingili Resort Maldives

Kuda Villingili stands out for its sheer scale and visual drama — it boasts one of the largest resort pools in the Maldives and an impressive lineup of seven restaurants. The resort attracts a social, energetic crowd and is well-suited to couples, groups of friends and families who want a stylish, high-energy island experience rather than pure seclusion. Transfers take around 30 minutes from the airport.
📍 Speedboat 30 min | 💰 From $4,500 based on B&B for 3 nights (2p, transfer included) | ⭐ 8.9
Kurumba Maldives

The first resort ever built in the Maldives, Kurumba is still one of the most popular — and for good reason. With eight restaurants, a lush tropical island, one of the fastest speedboat transfers in the atoll (just 10 minutes from the airport), and a kids club that genuinely entertained our children for hours while we finally sat still with a drink in hand, Kurumba offers a breadth of experience that's hard to match at its price point. We snorkelled directly from the beach on our first morning and spotted schools of unicornfish and two blacktip reef sharks before breakfast — the kind of moment that makes you wonder why you ever go anywhere else. The teppanyaki restaurant on our last evening — fire shows, flying knives, and lobster cooked right in front of us — was the dining highlight of our entire Maldives trip.
📍 Speedboat 10 min | 💰 From $1,050 based on B&B for 3 nights (2p, incl. transfer) | ⭐ 9.0

Malahini Kuda Bandos

If you're looking for a simple, affordable island just minutes from Malé — perhaps for a first or last night of your trip, or a budget-friendly short stay — Malahini Kuda Bandos ticks all the boxes. The island is small and relaxed, the house reef is decent for snorkelling, and the price is among the most accessible in the entire atoll.
📍 Speedboat 10 min | 💰 From $880 based on B&B for 3 nights (2p, incl. transfer) | ⭐ 8.5
Meeru Maldives Resort Island
Meeru is one of the largest resort islands in North Malé Atoll, with a wide range of accommodation types, six restaurants, and extensive activities. It attracts a mixed crowd of couples, families and groups and is positioned in the mid-range segment with reliable good value. At 55 minutes by speedboat, it's at the further end of the atoll — but that distance also means slightly more seclusion from the busier islands near the airport.
📍 Speedboat 55 min | 💰 From $2,000 based on HB for 3 nights (2p, incl. transfer) | ⭐ 9.3
OBLU Select Lobigili

An adults-only all-inclusive close to Malé with a strong overwater villa offering, an underwater dining experience, and a genuinely romantic atmosphere — OBLU Select Lobigili is a smart choice for honeymooners or couples who want premium AI convenience just 15 minutes from the airport. The transfer is included in the rate, which takes much of the administrative stress out of arrival day.
📍 Speedboat 15 min | 💰 From $3200 based on AI for 3 nights (2p, transfer included) | ⭐ 9.6
OBLU Select by Atmosphere at Sangeli

An upscale all-inclusive resort in the north of the atoll, OBLU Select Sangeli is a step above the entry-level all-inclusive category — more refined, with six restaurant options and a good house reef for snorkelling. It's positioned for couples and families who want the convenience and predictability of all-inclusive pricing combined with a genuine quality of experience.
📍 Speedboat 50 min | 💰 From $2,800 based on AI for 3 nights (2p, transfer included) | ⭐ —
OBLU Xperience Ailafushi

The most affordable all-inclusive option in this roundup, OBLU Xperience Ailafushi offers an entry-level AI experience just 15 minutes from the airport. 📍 Speedboat 15 min | 💰 From $1,900 based on AI for 3 nights (2p, incl. transfer) | ⭐ 9.1

One of the most acclaimed resorts in the Maldives, Reethi Rah is built on a vast, beautiful island in the north of the atoll — about 45 minutes by speedboat from the airport. With a 9.7 rating on Booking.com, exceptional service, eight restaurants and a world-class wellness centre, this is the resort for travellers who want an utterly flawless, ultra-luxury experience without needing to board a seaplane. The island itself is large enough that it never feels crowded, even at full capacity.
📍 Speedboat 45 min | 💰 From $9,200 based on B&B for 3 nights (2p, incl transfer) | ⭐ 9.7
Patina Maldives, Fari Islands

Patina is the design-led star of the Fari Islands development — a multi-resort complex on a group of islands in the north of the atoll that also includes the Marina @ CROSSROADS. With 12 restaurants and bars, a strong wellness offering, overwater villas and a modern, social atmosphere, Patina sits in the ultra-luxury segment but with a lively, lifestyle feel rather than a hushed, exclusive one. It suits couples, families and groups equally well.

📍 Speedboat 45 min | 💰 From $1,221 for 3 nights (2p, incl. transfer) | ⭐ 9.2
Villa Nautica Paradise Island

A large, lively island just 20 minutes from the airport, Villa Nautica is popular with families, groups and first-time visitors who want a wide range of facilities and activities at an accessible price. Five restaurants, a kids club, good snorkelling and a full-board or all-inclusive option make it a practical, energetic choice for travellers who want variety rather than seclusion.
📍 Speedboat 20 min | 💰 From $1,500 based on HB for 3 nights (2p, incl. transfer) | ⭐ 9.1
Resorts in South Malé Atoll
South Malé Atoll has fewer resorts than North Malé but punches well above its weight in terms of quality. The selection below is again a curated overview from our database — not every resort in the atoll is included. From intimate boutique luxury to the most exclusive ultra-luxury addresses in the country, this atoll rewards those who are looking for something exceptional. Resorts are listed alphabetically.
Adaaran Club Rannalhi
One of the most affordable all-inclusive resorts within reach of Malé, Rannalhi sits 45 minutes by speedboat in South Malé Atoll and offers a classic Maldives experience — good house reef, two restaurants, a beach that delivers — at a price point that makes the Maldives genuinely accessible. It's ideal for couples and families on a tighter budget who don't want to compromise on the fundamentals.

Anantara Dhigu is one of the most complete resorts in South Malé Atoll — six restaurants, a kids club, overwater villas, and strong family appeal, all just 35 minutes from the airport. Rated 9.3 on Booking.com, it's an excellent choice for families or couples who want genuine luxury with minimal transfer hassle. Guests at Anantara Dhigu also have access to the facilities of the adjacent Anantara Veli, which adds further dining options.

Anantara Veli Maldives Resort

Adults-only and built entirely on overwater villas, Anantara Veli is a compelling choice for honeymooners and couples who want a romantic, design-conscious escape close to Malé. The five restaurants and the arrangement that allows access to the neighbouring Anantara Dhigu facilities mean dining options are wide and varied. The lack of a beach villa means guests are on the water from the moment they step outside.
📍 Speedboat 30 min | 💰 From $3,000 based on B&B for 3 nights (2p, incl. transfer) | ⭐ 9.4
Como Cocoa Island

Como Cocoa Island is instantly recognisable by its iconic dhoni-shaped overwater villas — long, narrow structures based on the traditional Maldivian boat that fan out across the lagoon like a set of wooden spokes. With one of the best house reefs in South Malé Atoll, a renowned COMO Shambhala wellness programme and an intimate, adults-preferred atmosphere, it is among the most distinctive luxury offerings in the entire atoll.

At just 10 minutes from the airport and with a transfer included in the all-inclusive rate, dusitD2 Feydhoo is one of the closest resort options to Malé in this entire roundup. It's a compact, lifestyle-oriented property rather than a traditional secluded island — more of an upscale transit base or very short stay option than a full resort experience. Ideal for one or two nights when you want convenience without paying airport hotel prices.
📍 Speedboat 10 min | 💰 From $2,500 based on AI for 3 nights (2p, transfer included) | ⭐ 9.4
Embudu Village

One of the best-value resorts in South Malé Atoll, Embudu Village has built its reputation on a genuinely excellent house reef — one of the finest in the atoll at this price point — and a classic, unpretentious island atmosphere that attracts divers and snorkellers who care more about what's in the water than the number of restaurants. Simple, honest and affordable, it's 20 minutes from the airport and consistently popular with guests who come back year after year.
📍 Speedboat 20 min | 💰 From $1,250 based on HB for 3 nights (2p, incl. transfer) | ⭐ 8.8
Naladhu Private Island Maldives

Naladhu offers something genuinely rare this close to Malé: extreme privacy. With only a handful of large pool villas on a small island managed with butler service, it operates more like a private estate than a conventional resort. Sharing facilities with the adjacent Anantara Veli, guests have access to five additional restaurants and activities — while retreating each evening to one of the most private villas in the atoll.

Stylish, contemporary and focused on design and atmosphere, Velassaru appeals to couples who want a genuinely beautiful resort experience without the ultra-luxury price tag. 📍 Speedboat 40 min | 💰 From $13.400 for 3 nights (2p, incl transfer) | ⭐ 9.3
Local Islands in North and South Malé Atoll
One of the great advantages of both atolls is their proximity to some of the Maldives' most established guesthouse islands. Staying on a local island here is genuinely easy to combine with a resort stay — and for budget-conscious travellers, it opens up a completely different side of the Maldives.
Malé (North Malé Atoll)
Malé is one of the world's most densely populated capital cities — a compact, chaotic, fascinating place that most Maldives visitors fly through without ever really exploring. It's worth changing that. The old fish market, the colourful streets of the old town, the grand Friday Mosque with its intricate coral-stone work, the National Museum — there's genuine culture here that no resort can replicate. Most hotels in Malé are practical transit stays rather than destination accommodation, but spending a night here at the start or end of your trip gives you context for everything you see in the atolls. Hulhule Island Hotel (at the airport island) and various guesthouses in Malé itself are the main options. If you have an afternoon to spare, take the short ferry across to Villingili — technically a district of Malé but a world apart in feel, with no cars (only electric carts), lush trees lining quiet streets and a beach that gets genuinely busy with locals on weekends. It's not a place to base a holiday, but it's a lovely half-day contrast to the bustle of the capital.

Hulhumale (North Malé Atoll)

Hulhumale is the reclaimed island directly adjacent to Velana International Airport — connected to the airport island by road bridge — and has grown rapidly into a modern, functional alternative to staying in central Malé. It's the practical choice for a late-night arrival or early-morning departure: quieter than Malé, with a beach, decent guesthouses and restaurants, and no boat journey involved. We stayed at Reef Guest House here after landing at 6:30pm — too late for onward boat travel — and found it warm, well-run and exactly what you need for a single transit night. If your flight arrives after dark, Hulhumale is the sensible solution.
Himmafushi (North Malé Atoll)
Himmafushi sits about 17 kilometres north of Malé — around 20 minutes by speedboat — and is primarily known as a surf island. The famous Jailbreaks surf break draws intermediate and advanced surfers year-round, and several guesthouses on the island are oriented specifically around surf packages and boat charters. Beyond surfing, the island has traditional dhoni boatbuilding yards that make for an interesting visit, a bikini beach, and good snorkelling on nearby reefs. It's smaller and quieter than Thulusdhoo, with a strong local identity and a more authentic community feel.
Huraa (North Malé Atoll)
Huraa is one of the more historically significant and underrated local islands in the atoll — it was the birthplace of the last royal dynasty of the Maldives, founded in 1757, and the island takes genuine pride in that heritage. Located about 20 kilometres northeast of Malé (roughly 15–20 minutes by speedboat), it has a bikini beach, around nine guesthouses, local cafés and restaurants, and a small mangrove forest to the north. The atmosphere is quieter and more personal than the bigger tourist islands. For travellers who want a genuinely local experience without the crowds of Maafushi or the surf-specific vibe of Thulusdhoo, Huraa is an excellent choice.
Thulusdhoo (North Malé Atoll)

Thulusdhoo is best known as the surf island of the Maldives — home to the famous Cokes surf break, one of the best right-handers in the Indian Ocean. But it has much more to offer beyond the waves: a functioning Coca-Cola bottling plant (yes, really — a surprisingly interesting local visit), beautiful beaches, good snorkelling in the surrounding waters, and a growing infrastructure of guesthouses and restaurants. The island is more developed than many local islands, with regular speedboat connections and day trips to nearby sandbanks and snorkel sites. It's about 35 minutes by speedboat from Malé.

Dhiffushi (North Malé Atoll)

Dhiffushi is a quieter and less visited alternative to Thulusdhoo — which, for many travellers, is precisely its appeal. A small island about 35 kilometres northeast of Malé, it has a laid-back atmosphere, a good bikini beach and easy access to excursions including snorkelling trips and sandbank visits. Guesthouse accommodation is simple and affordable. It's the kind of island where you eat fresh fish at a local restaurant, rent a bicycle, and genuinely slow down.

Gaafaru (Gaafaru Atoll)
Gaafaru sits in its own small atoll — Gaafaru Atoll — just north of North Malé Atoll, and is one of the most off-the-beaten-path local islands reachable from Malé without a domestic flight. It takes about 45–60 minutes by speedboat and the journey alone signals that you're heading somewhere genuinely different. The island is a traditional fishing community built around a wide, shallow lagoon — the kind of place where the pace of life has barely changed, tourism is extremely low-key, and the handful of guesthouses that operate here cater to travellers who actively want to get away from the more developed circuit. The lagoon is ideal for snorkelling and the area is known for strong reef health. If the “end of the world” atmosphere of quieter local islands appeals to you — and if Maafushi feels too busy or Thulusdhoo too surf-focused — Gaafaru is worth serious consideration. A note on geography: while Gaafaru technically falls in its own separate atoll rather than North Malé Atoll, it is closely connected to this region in terms of access and travel routes, which is why we include it here.
Maafushi (South Malé Atoll)

Maafushi is the most-visited guesthouse island in the Maldives — and the reason is simple: it's accessible, well-organised, and genuinely excellent value. The island has dozens of guesthouses across all price points, a wide range of excursion operators, bikini beaches, and a buzzing local atmosphere. For travellers who want to experience the Maldives without resort prices, Maafushi is the go-to first choice. It sits about 26 kilometres south of Malé — roughly 45 minutes by speedboat or around 2 hours by public ferry.

Gulhi (South Malé Atoll)

Gulhi is one of the smaller, more authentic local islands with tourist infrastructure in South Malé Atoll. It sits close to Maafushi — which means you can combine a night or two here with time on the more developed neighbouring island — but retains a much more genuinely local feel. The streets are narrow and quiet, the community is tight-knit, and the snorkelling directly off the beach is consistently good. It's a good choice for travellers who've already done Maafushi and want something calmer.

Guraidhoo (South Malé Atoll)
Guraidhoo is a small but well-equipped local island in South Malé Atoll, about 32 kilometres from Malé and only 8 kilometres from Maafushi — which makes it easy to combine both in a single trip. The island has around 13 guesthouses with more being developed, a bikini beach (though the snorkelling directly off the beach requires a short boat trip to reach the house reef), and an active excursion scene including snorkelling safaris, sandbank visits and surf day trips. It's often described as more picturesque and atmospheric than Maafushi — quieter, with a prettier streetscape — and is a popular choice for travellers who want the South Malé Atoll local island experience with slightly less tourist traffic.
Practical Tips for North and South Malé Atoll
Best Time to Visit North and South Malé Atoll
The dry season runs from November to April, with January to March generally considered the best months — blue skies, calm seas, and excellent visibility underwater. December and January can bring some wind, particularly in the outer channels. The wet season runs from May to October, with June, July and August seeing the heaviest rainfall. That said, rain in the Maldives tends to come in short, heavy showers rather than all-day downpours — and rates are significantly lower in the wet season, which makes it a real consideration for budget-conscious travellers.
For manta ray encounters in this atoll, the best season is December to April when manta rays congregate around certain channels and cleaning stations in North Malé Atoll. For more detail on the best time to visit the Maldives overall, take a look at our Best Time to Go to Maldives guide.
Short stays of 3–5 nights work very well in this atoll precisely because no seaplane logistics are involved. There's no need for the typical “minimum 4 nights” recommendation that applies to seaplane-access atolls.
Getting There
All transfers in North and South Malé Atoll operate from Velana International Airport (MLE), located on Hulhule Island adjacent to Malé. The process is simple: land at MLE → collect your luggage → exit arrivals → find your resort's speedboat jetty or the public jetty depending on transfer type. Resort representatives typically meet guests in the arrivals hall.
If your flight arrives late at night (after around 9–10pm), most resorts will arrange an overnight at a transit hotel in Hulhumale — the newly developed reclaimed island directly connected to the airport — with your speedboat transfer the following morning. This is standard practice and nothing to worry about. We did exactly this on our trip and found the Reef Guest House in Hulhumale a friendly, perfectly practical place to spend the night.

Tips & Good to Know
- Alcohol on local islands: Alcohol is not available on inhabited local islands. Resorts, which sit on uninhabited islands, operate under a different system and can serve alcohol freely.
- Dress code: On local islands, modest dress is expected away from designated bikini beaches. Swimwear on the street or near mosques is not appropriate.
- Currency: The Maldivian Rufiyaa is the official currency, but US dollars are widely accepted at resorts. On local islands, carry some local currency for restaurants and small shops.
- Mobile coverage: Good mobile and data coverage across both atolls, including on most speedboats and near the main islands.
- Combining atolls: It is straightforward to combine a stay in North or South Malé Atoll with time in another atoll — particularly Baa Atoll or Ari Atoll — using domestic flights and speedboats. Our Maldives vacation planning guide covers how to plan multi-atoll trips.
Final Thoughts on North and South Malé Atoll
For most people visiting the Maldives for the first time, North and South Malé Atoll is the obvious starting point — and with good reason. The combination of short, simple speedboat transfers, an enormous range of resort choices across every budget, and some of the most iconic properties in the entire Indian Ocean makes this the most versatile part of the Maldives archipelago. Whether you're here for three nights on your way home from Sri Lanka or settling in for a full two-week honeymoon, there's a resort in these atolls that was built for exactly your trip.
The local island scene adds another dimension entirely. Maafushi, Thulusdhoo, Dhiffushi and Gulhi mean that a genuinely authentic Maldivian experience — local food, local life, dramatically lower prices — is never more than a public ferry ride away. For travellers who want to see both sides of the Maldives, this atoll makes that combination easier than anywhere else.

Frequently Asked Questions
How far is North Malé Atoll from the airport?
North Malé Atoll begins immediately around Velana International Airport (MLE) — some resorts are just 10 to 15 minutes away by speedboat. The furthest resorts in the atoll are around 55 minutes away. South Malé Atoll is slightly further, with most resorts reachable in 15 to 45 minutes. No domestic flight or seaplane is required to reach any resort in either atoll, which makes this one of the most logistically simple parts of the Maldives to reach from the airport. Classics like Kurumba Maldives are just a 10-minute speedboat from the airport.
Do you need a seaplane to get to resorts in North and South Malé Atoll?
No — every resort in North and South Malé Atoll is accessible by speedboat directly from the airport. This is one of the main reasons the atoll is so popular with first-time visitors and travellers on shorter stays. Speedboat transfers range from around 10 minutes to just under an hour depending on the resort. Some properties include the transfer in the room rate; others charge separately, typically $100–$350 per person one-way.
Is North Malé Atoll good for snorkelling?
Yes, particularly if you choose a resort with a strong house reef. Baros, Huvafenfushi and Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru are consistently praised for excellent snorkelling directly from the beach. Blacktip reef sharks and sea turtles are commonly sighted, and the channels between islands host regular manta ray activity from December to April. Even resorts with average-rated house reefs typically offer guided snorkelling excursions to nearby dive sites.
What is the best resort in North Malé Atoll for families?
For families, Centara Mirage Lagoon, Villa Nautica, and Adaaran Select Hudhuranfushi are strong choices at different price points — all offering kids clubs, family-friendly meal plans, and easy logistics. One & Only Reethi Rah and Patina Maldives Fari Islands offer exceptional family experiences at the luxury end, with more space, more restaurants, and higher-end kids programmes. Family-friendly luxury stays like One & Only Reethi Rah are a popular North Malé pick.
Are there local islands in South Malé Atoll?
Yes — South Malé Atoll contains some of the most developed guesthouse islands in the Maldives. Maafushi is the most visited local island in the entire country, offering dozens of guesthouses, organised excursion operators and good snorkelling access. Gulhi is a quieter, more local alternative nearby. Both are reachable by speedboat or public ferry from Malé.
Can you combine North Malé Atoll with another atoll?
Yes, and it's a popular approach. The most common combination is North or South Malé Atoll for a resort stay plus Baa Atoll for manta ray encounters and a more remote experience — or Ari Atoll for whale shark snorkelling. Domestic flights connect Malé to airports near most atolls. Budget at least 7 nights total to make a two-atoll trip work well without feeling rushed.
What is the best time to visit North and South Malé Atoll?
The dry season from November to April offers the best weather — calm seas, good visibility and consistent sunshine. January to March is generally the most reliable period. The wet season from May to October brings more rainfall and occasional rougher seas, but stays are significantly cheaper and the rain is rarely continuous. For manta ray sightings in the atoll, aim for December through April.
Is the Waldorf Astoria Ithaafushi worth the price?
The Waldorf Astoria Ithaafushi consistently ranks among the top ultra-luxury resorts in the Maldives and currently holds a 9.3 rating on Booking.com. With eleven restaurants, massive pool villas, a privacy score of 10 and one of the most complete wellness and dining offerings in the country — all within 40 minutes of the airport — it offers an extraordinary combination of accessibility and exclusivity. Whether the premium pricing is “worth it” depends on budget, but for those who can spend it, the experience is considered exceptional. If the price is steep, South Malé resorts like Anantara Dhigu offer a more accessible luxury option.
