Few places in the Maldives are as closely linked to manta rays as Baa Atoll. Each year, travellers come here hoping to snorkel with these gentle giants in Hanifaru Bay — one of the most remarkable marine wildlife encounters in the world. Staying nearby can make the difference between a rare excursion and something that feels surprisingly accessible.

Kiha Beach Maldives sits on the local island of Dharavandhoo, just minutes from this famous marine reserve. During our own stay here, we experienced the hotel as a base for exploring the surrounding reefs, beaches, and island life — a setting that feels very different from the polished world of private island resorts.

This Kiha Beach Maldives review looks closely at what staying here is actually like: the rooms, the beach, snorkelling and diving opportunities, and how the experience compares with both nearby guesthouses and resort stays in Baa Atoll.

Hotel Overview

Kiha Beach Maldives is a locally owned, boutique‑style hotel on the island of Dharavandhoo in Baa Atoll. Originally designed as a small hotel with around 18 rooms, it combines modern comfort with clean, functional interiors and subtle local touches, with the emphasis firmly on marine experiences rather than design statements.

The hotel is currently expanding, with an additional building planned to increase capacity to roughly 60 rooms. This matters for expectations: Kiha Beach already operates more like a mid‑sized local‑island hotel, with a relatively structured setup and a less personal, more functional service style than small guesthouses.

Compared to private resorts, the atmosphere remains grounded and nature‑focused rather than entertainment‑driven. Service is friendly and helpful when approached, but largely reactive rather than proactive — closer to a hotel model than a homestay experience.

Trade‑off (Who this is not for): Travellers expecting highly personalised service, a strong host‑guest relationship, or a quiet adults‑only atmosphere may find Kiha Beach too impersonal for their taste.

Rooms & Accommodation

Kiha Beach Maldives offers a small selection of room categories designed around comfort and practicality rather than visual luxury. All rooms are spacious, air‑conditioned, and well maintained, with a calm, functional style that suits longer stays and early mornings for diving or snorkelling trips.

Rooms are available with either island view or sea view, which makes a noticeable difference to the overall experience. The sea‑view rooms feel brighter and more open, while island‑view rooms are slightly more enclosed and focused on practicality.

Room Types at Kiha Beach Maldives

Deluxe Room (island view)
The Deluxe Room is best suited for couples or solo travellers who plan to spend most of their time exploring the island, diving, or snorkelling. These rooms are typically island‑facing and offer everything needed for a comfortable stay without unnecessary extras, making them the most value‑focused option.

Ultimate Room (sea view)
The Ultimate Room is similar in size to the Deluxe Room but comes with a sea view and a bathtub inside the room. This category is especially appealing to divers or travellers staying longer, who appreciate having a proper space to unwind and recover after full days in the water.

Family Room (sea view – this was the room we stayed in)
The Family Room is designed for travellers visiting Kiha Beach Maldives with children. It comfortably accommodates four people and includes a sea‑view balcony, making it practical for both daytime downtime and relaxed evenings once children are asleep. This was the room we stayed in and worked well in terms of space, layout, and overall comfort for a family stay.

Budget vs Value Logic
At Kiha Beach Maldives, you are paying for location, space, and ease, not for design‑led luxury. Compared to simpler guesthouses on Dharavandhoo, the rooms feel noticeably more comfortable and polished. Compared to private island resorts, they are functional rather than indulgent — but at a fraction of the total nightly cost.

Dining & Culinary Experience

Dining here is convenient, but it is not one of the hotel’s main strengths. The on-site restaurant serves a mix of Maldivian and international dishes, prepared well and suitable for most tastes, but without the variety or refinement you might expect at a resort.

Guests can choose between the following meal plans:

  • Bed & Breakfast (BB): breakfast only
  • Half Board (HB): breakfast and dinner
  • Full Board (FB): breakfast, lunch, and dinner

Breakfast is the strongest meal here and works well as a base, especially if you plan early starts for snorkelling or diving trips.

During our stay, we found lunch and dinner to be relatively pricey, especially when compared to other restaurants on the island, which offer similar dishes at lower prices. Because Dharavandhoo is small and easy to explore, eating out is simple and does not feel like a compromise.

It’s also worth noting that, as on all local islands in the Maldives, alcohol is not served at the hotel.

Trade-off: If dining is a central part of your travel experience, or if you prefer all-inclusive meal plans with extensive choice, Kiha Beach Maldives will feel limited. Travellers who enjoy combining hotel breakfasts with local restaurants tend to get the most value here.

Direct Access to the Bikini Beach & House Reef Snorkelling

Direct access to the bikini beach is one of Kiha Beach Maldives’ strongest practical advantages. The beach sits directly in front of the hotel, is well maintained, and offers easy entry into calm, clear water — ideal for spontaneous swims and short snorkelling sessions without planning a boat trip.

Snorkelling straight from the beach is genuinely rewarding. Entry is simple from the shoreline, and you can expect colourful reef fish almost immediately. On calmer days, sightings can include turtles and the occasional reef shark. Coral quality is mixed, as is typical around local islands, but the marine life makes casual snorkelling worthwhile.

Conditions vary with wind and tide, so visibility is best on calm mornings. There are no marked snorkelling routes or lifeguards, which means this spot works best for confident swimmers or families who are comfortable supervising children closely in open water.

Trade-off: If you are looking for pristine coral gardens, guided snorkelling circuits, or a resort-style house reef experience, Kiha Beach may feel limited. Travellers who value easy, independent snorkelling and frequent short swims tend to get the most out of this setup.

Value logic: You gain daily, effortless access to the ocean and a usable house reef without paying resort premiums or relying on scheduled excursions.

Swimming Pool

Kiha Beach is one of the few hotels on Dharavandhoo with a swimming pool, which is a clear plus on a local island where pools are not standard. The pool itself looks attractive and is nicely integrated into the hotel, but it is located directly next to the restaurant, which makes it feel less inviting for spontaneous swims.

Another thing to note is that the pool area does not have sun loungers. Combined with the fact that the water felt quite cold compared to the warm sea just steps away, we found ourselves using the pool less than expected. Our kids only swam there once, and most of our water time naturally shifted to the ocean instead.

Sunset on Dharavandhoo

You don’t have to go far for sunset on Dharavandhoo. From the beach in front of the hotel, the sun sets directly over the ocean, and most evenings are quiet and unhurried. The light fades gradually, the temperature drops, and the beach empties as the day comes to an end.

Around this time, local fishermen often step into the shallow water along the shoreline to fish. Standing waist-deep in the sea and casting their lines by hand, they become part of the scene rather than an activity organised for visitors. Sitting on the sand and watching this unfold feels natural and unforced — a small but clear reminder that you’re staying on a local island where daily life continues alongside your stay.

Spa & Wellness at Kiha Beach Maldives

The spa at Kiha Beach Maldives is a calm, low-key place to unwind after time in the sea. Rather than a resort-style spa with extensive facilities, it focuses on massages and simple body treatments — a practical option if you want to relax without leaving the island.

Before your treatment, you’re welcomed with a cold tea of the day and given time to change, with a kimono and slippers provided. Treatments are unhurried, and therapists are happy to adjust pressure, temperature, or music to your comfort, creating a relaxed and easy-going experience.

This is not a destination spa, but it works well as an add-on to a snorkelling or diving day, especially if you’re looking to ease tired muscles rather than book a full wellness programme.

Trade-off:
Travellers expecting a large spa menu, luxury facilities, or a resort-style wellness experience may find the spa at Kiha Beach limited. Those looking for a simple, comfortable massage without resort pricing tend to appreciate it most.

Activities & Excursions from Kiha Beach Maldives

Kiha Beach Maldives can arrange a range of excursions and activities directly through the hotel, which is convenient if you prefer to organise experiences in one place rather than contacting multiple providers on the island.

Available activities typically include:

  • Swimming with manta rays (seasonal, roughly May–November)
  • Swimming with whale sharks (only when sightings are confirmed)
  • Scuba diving
  • Snorkelling trips by boat
  • Sandbank visits
  • Fishing trips
  • Selected water sports

Most group excursions require a minimum of six participants to go ahead. The main exceptions are manta ray and whale shark trips, which may run with fewer people, but usually come at a higher price and only take place when conditions and sightings allow.

As a general guideline, most standard excursions cost around US$30 per person (prices in 2025). Manta ray and whale shark trips are more expensive, typically around US$50 per person, reflecting their exclusivity and the need for spotter coordination. Even so, these prices are significantly lower than at private island resorts.

During our stay in August, the minimum group requirement meant that some activities — including a snorkelling trip and a sandbank visit — did not go ahead due to a lack of participants. Because of this, we had to organise these experiences elsewhere at short notice, which involved walking around the island and checking availability with other providers. This is worth keeping in mind if you’re travelling outside peak periods or staying only a few nights.

If you want a broader overview of excursions across the country, see our guide to Top Activities in Maldives: Snorkelling, Diving & Swimming with Manta Rays.

Trade-off:
Activity availability is not guaranteed on a day-to-day basis. Travellers who prefer fixed schedules and guaranteed excursions may find resort-based activity programmes more predictable.

If you prefer to arrange the activities upfront to be sure you can go, these are the most popular activities at Dharavandhoo.

Value logic:
If you’re flexible with timing, organising activities through Kiha Beach offers strong value by Maldives standards. Prices are significantly lower than at nearby private island resorts, while access to key experiences in Baa Atoll — including manta ray snorkelling and diving — remains easy and direct. The trade-off is flexibility rather than certainty: lower costs come with less guaranteed scheduling.

Diving & Snorkelling Near Kiha Beach Maldives

Hanifaru Bay (UNESCO Biosphere Reserve)

One of the main reasons travellers choose Kiha Beach Maldives is its close proximity to Hanifaru Bay, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and the world’s most famous manta ray feeding ground. From the hotel, it’s just a 5–10 minute boat ride, making it easy to join marine excursions even during shorter stays.

To protect the fragile ecosystem, diving is not permitted inside Hanifaru Bay. All encounters here are strictly snorkelling-only, with swimmers staying at the surface while manta rays feed below. This approach helps preserve the bay and ensures a respectful, low-impact wildlife experience.

Diving trips are organised to reef sites outside the bay, where divers can still encounter manta rays, reef sharks, sea turtles, and healthy coral formations. This setup works well at Kiha Beach: snorkellers benefit from quick access to Hanifaru Bay, while divers have a good selection of quality dive sites throughout Baa Atoll. Short boat distances also allow for flexible planning when conditions are favourable.

Snorkelling with Manta Rays (and Occasional Whale Sharks)

From roughly May to November, manta rays gather in large numbers in Hanifaru Bay to feed, creating one of the most spectacular snorkelling experiences in the Maldives. Encounters are carefully managed, with strict rules to protect both snorkellers and marine life. Whale sharks are far less predictable, but are occasionally spotted elsewhere in Baa Atoll during the same season.

During our stay, we joined a manta snorkelling trip that showed just how dynamic these encounters can be. After a quiet first stop, a second location suddenly came alive, with around 15 manta rays circling and feeding just metres beneath us. Floating above them in near silence was unforgettable and without doubt one of the highlights of our time on Dharavandhoo.

If you want a deeper understanding of when and where these encounters are most likely — and how they are managed responsibly — we’ve covered this in detail in our guide to: Manta Rays in Maldives: Best Places, Season & Ethical Snorkelling Guide.

Kiha Beach Maldives Prices & Value

Prices generally start from around US$250 per night, depending on season, room type, and availability. Sea-view rooms and family rooms sit at the higher end of this range, while island-view rooms are typically more affordable.

In the context of the Maldives, this places Kiha Beach above simple local guesthouses, but well below nearby private island resorts — especially when you factor in direct beach access, proximity to Hanifaru Bay, and on-site diving facilities.

When this is good value:
If your main priorities are marine life, snorkelling or diving, and staying close to Hanifaru Bay without resort pricing, Kiha Beach offers a strong balance between cost and experience.

When it may not be:
If your trip revolves around dining, service levels, or luxury facilities, a higher-priced resort may ultimately suit you better.

For current rates, seasonal differences, and room availability, it’s easiest to compare options via a trusted booking platform where you can see prices, room types, and recent guest reviews in one place.

Dharavandhoo Island: What It’s Like to Stay Here

Dharavandhoo is a small, laid-back local island that’s easy to explore on foot. You can walk from one side of the island to the other in around 30 minutes, which gives it a friendly, village-like feel rather than the sense of being spread out or tourist-driven.

From Kiha Beach Maldives, it’s roughly a 10-minute walk to most of the island’s facilities, including several local restaurants, a handful of small shops, and the harbour. This makes it easy to eat out, pick up essentials, or simply observe daily island life — all without needing bikes or transport.

Dharavandhoo suits travellers who enjoy a calm pace, simple routines, and local interaction rather than nightlife or organised entertainment. Evenings are quiet, and island life continues around you rather than being staged for visitors.

If you want a broader feel for the island — including where to eat, what daily life looks like, and how Dharavandhoo compares to other local islands in the Maldives — we’ve covered that in detail in our full guide to: Dharavandhoo: Maldives’ Best Local Island for Authentic Culture, Budget Stays & Hanifaru Bay Adventures.

Location

Kiha Beach Maldives is located about 120 km north of Malé International Airport, on the local island of Dharavandhoo in Baa Atoll — a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve known for its rich marine life. While the distance may seem considerable on a map, reaching Dharavandhoo is straightforward and well organised, even for first-time visitors to the Maldives.

The island’s location is one of the main reasons Kiha Beach is so popular with manta ray travellers: Dharavandhoo is one of the closest inhabited islands to Hanifaru Bay, keeping transfer times short once you arrive in Baa Atoll.

How to Get There

There are two main ways to reach Dharavandhoo from Malé:

Domestic flight
Malé (MLE) → Dharavandhoo Airport (approx. 35 minutes)
This is the most popular and convenient option, especially for travellers with limited time or families.
Indicative cost (one-way, per person): US$110–140 (prices 2026)

Scheduled speedboat
Malé → Dharavandhoo (approx. 2–2.5 hours, limited departures)
A more budget-friendly option, but with fewer daily services and longer travel time.
Indicative cost (one-way, per person): US$60–80 (prices 2026)

Most travellers choose the domestic flight for speed and comfort. Dharavandhoo Airport is one of the closest domestic airports to Hanifaru Bay, which keeps onward boat transfers short and flexible. Kiha Beach Maldives can assist with arranging transfers after booking.

Pros & Cons Summary

To help you decide whether Kiha Beach Maldives fits your travel style, here’s a concise overview of the main advantages — and the key trade-offs to be aware of before booking.

Pros

  • Very close to Hanifaru Bay, making manta ray snorkelling easy to combine with shorter stays
  • Direct access to a bikini beach with easy entry into the sea
  • Good snorkelling and diving opportunities without resort pricing
  • Comfortable rooms with sea-view options, suitable for longer stays and families

Cons

  • Service is friendly but largely reactive, rather than proactive or personalised
  • Quiet evenings and limited nightlife, typical of local islands
  • Domestic transfer required, adding time and cost to your journey
  • Fewer facilities than private island resorts, with a more hotel-like feel than a boutique guesthouse

Our Final Verdict

For us, Kiha Beach Maldives worked because it delivers exactly what we were looking for on a local island in the Maldives: direct access to the sea, easy snorkelling, and unforgettable marine experiences — without resort pricing or formality.

What we personally appreciated most was the direct access to the bikini beach, the comfortable sea-view family room that gave us space to unwind as a family, and the fact that experiences like manta ray snorkelling felt genuinely accessible rather than staged or exclusive. Being able to step straight onto the beach and into the water made everyday moments just as enjoyable as the bigger excursions.

That said, Kiha Beach is not without its trade-offs. Service is friendly but not particularly proactive, meals at the hotel restaurant are relatively expensive compared to other places on the island (for us not a downside, as we enjoyed trying different local restaurants), and some activities depend on minimum group sizes, meaning they are not always guaranteed.

If you’re comfortable with that balance, Kiha Beach Maldives offers a rewarding local-island stay focused on nature, marine life, and simplicity — with experiences that would cost significantly more at a private island resort.

Frequently Asked Questions about Kiha Beach

What is the best time to visit Kiha Beach Maldives?

The best time to visit Kiha Beach Maldives is between May and November, when manta rays gather in nearby Hanifaru Bay. During this southwest monsoon season, plankton levels rise and attract large numbers of manta rays, creating excellent snorkelling opportunities. Outside this period, marine life is still present, but the chances of witnessing large manta feeding events are significantly lower.

Is alcohol available at Kiha Beach Maldives?

No, alcohol is not served at Kiha Beach Maldives because it is located on a local island where alcohol sales are not permitted. This rule applies to all inhabited islands in the Maldives. Travellers who wish to drink alcohol usually do so during day trips to nearby resort islands or at floating bars that operate outside local island regulations.

How close is Hanifaru Bay to Kiha Beach Maldives?

Hanifaru Bay is located only about a 5–10 minute boat ride from Kiha Beach Maldives. This close proximity makes Dharavandhoo one of the most convenient bases for manta ray snorkelling in Baa Atoll. Because travel times are short, excursions can often be organised quickly when manta rays are spotted, which increases the chances of experiencing these encounters during your stay.

Is Kiha Beach Maldives family-friendly?

Yes, Kiha Beach Maldives is well suited for families who enjoy relaxed island environments and ocean activities. The hotel offers spacious family rooms and direct access to the beach, making it easy to spend time in the water together. However, families should note that the hotel does not have kids’ clubs or resort-style entertainment, so the experience is more nature-focused and independent.

Can you snorkel directly from the beach at Kiha Beach Maldives?

Yes, snorkelling from the beach at Kiha Beach Maldives is easy and often rewarding. Entry into the water is simple from the shoreline, and reef fish are commonly visible close to the hotel. While coral quality varies, marine life sightings can include turtles and reef sharks. Calm mornings typically offer the best visibility for relaxed snorkelling sessions.

Are activities guaranteed at Kiha Beach Maldives?

Not always. Some excursions organised through the hotel depend on reaching a minimum number of participants, which means they may not run every day. During quieter periods or shorter stays, travellers may occasionally need to wait for enough guests to join or arrange activities through other providers on the island. Flexibility helps when planning excursions here.

Would we Stay Again at Kiha Beach?

Yes — we would stay at Kiha Beach Maldives again. Not because everything is perfect, but because the overall balance works well if your priorities are marine life, beach access, and a relaxed local-island atmosphere.

The location near Hanifaru Bay, the easy access to the sea, and the calm rhythm of Dharavandhoo make it a very practical base for exploring Baa Atoll. For travellers who value nature and simplicity over resort-style luxury, Kiha Beach Maldives offers a stay that feels genuine and well connected to its surroundings.

If you’re considering Dharavandhoo for manta ray snorkelling or diving in Baa Atoll, Kiha Beach Maldives remains one of the more comfortable and well-positioned places to stay on the island.
